Carte de visite of Lieutenant Colonel Gardiner A.A. Deane, Sixtieth U.S. Colored Infantry. Deane, a resident of Farmington, Iowa, enlisted as a Captain in the U.S. Colored Infantry at age 23 on October 11, 1863. He survived the Civil War. His obituary in the Arkansas Gazette, August 10, 1919, page six, says Deane volunteered for Civl War service as a private and after two years "was promoted to Captain of the First Iowa Infantry. A year later he was promoted to the rank of lieutenant-colonel and was made inspector of artillery on the staff of Brigadier General Buford." Deane eventually became land commissioner for the Missouri Pacific railroad. The photograph is part of a group of images collected by Colonel John G. Hudson, First Iowa Infantry, African Descent, of federal soldiers and officers stationed at Helena, Phillips County, Arkansas, 1863-1864.

Gardiner Andrus Armstrong Deane was born 23 June 1840 in Norfolk County, Mass. He served in the Civil War, rising to the rank of lieutenant-colonel and inspector-general of the department stationed at Little Rock. At the conclusion of the war, he went into the mercantile business until 1867 when he became chief clerk of the land department of the Union Pacific Railroad (Central Branch).
